It’s the early 1940s and America has only just begun to see the effects of World War II. Crossing generations and genres, PORCHES follows several families as they watch their once vibrant neighborhood decline and crumble due to the exodus of fathers and brothers being sent off to a futile war—with no promise of victory. Journey back to the days where children ran from porch to porch in search of adventure—blurring the lines of family and neighbor—and their only concern was the flickering street lights at dusk.
Karamu House invites you to witness history in the making! Karamu presents the world premiere of PORCHES, a new play with music devised and written by the Karamu Summer Arts Intensive young artists and professional teaching artists. The performance will take place on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 6:30 PM in Karamu’s historical Jelliffe Theatre.
The students in the program worked with the teaching artists to devise the scenes in this dramatic heartfelt American tale. Through collaboration, they have creatively incorporated music that crosses generations and genres.
